DETAILS

Bakwena translated from Setswana, means people of the crocodile, this refers not only to our situation, but is also one of the largest tribes in Botswana; naturally the owners are both Bakwena!

Owners Jenny and Adam Young have worked throughout Botswana, managing bush camps and lodges and running their own safari company.
“Having spent so much our time working in luxury lodges, we wanted our guests to enjoy similar levels of comfort at a reasonable rate and more importantly be able to take comfort that in choosing Bakwena as their destination, they have also made the right choice for the environment. We acquired our land in 2000 and since then we have been growing our dream and planting the seeds of the indigenous riverine woodland that guests will find here today. What started out as a barren soccer pitch has become what you see today, a refuge for our guests and any wildlife that chooses to share our sanctuary.”After travelling the world and living in Cape Town while building towards the goal of Chobe Bakwena Lodge, they have returned to their heartland bringing their two young sons back to their “real” home in Botswana.

ACTIVITIES

Chobe is home to Africa’s largest elephant population with a daily migration of these magnificent pachyderms from their foraging grounds in the Teak forests, to the mighty Chobe to quench their thirst. Naturally, most activities are based around game viewing, either by vehicle or boat.

We do however offer several options tailored to our guests:

• Game Drive, generally a three hour activity in the Chobe National Park, early morning offers the best chance to spot some of the shier big cats, however all times of the day offer unique experiences!

• Boat Cruise, definitely the most sedate method of game viewing, interrupted only by the harrumphing hippos! The Chobe River has one of the highest concentrations of bird species in the world, from the elusive Finfoot to the regal African Fisheagle

• Bird watching, by boat, on foot or from the comfort of your own deck; there is a wide variety of species to see including: trumpeter hornbills, crested barbets, weavers, Bishop birds, the pin tailed whydah, collared palm thrush and African fin foot.

• Nature walk; these can either be conducted on the property or for the more adventurous, walks can be arranged in the nearby Lesoma valley or the surrounding forest reserves.

• Village Tour; why not join one of our guides for an educational stroll through the nearby village and learn a little about local customs and traditions.

• Island visit; Impalila Island across the River is in Namibia and is well worth a visit to see Africa’s other grey giant – the mystical baobab tree. The Island also offers village walks as life on the island is still lived to ancient traditions. The villagers can also provide guided birding and mekoro (dugout canoe) trips.

• River cruise; a sedate cruise along our stretch of river should offer some great birding and you will get to glide across the intersection of four African countries (without passport bureaucracy) – Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe!

• Fishing; the Chobe and Zambezi river systems are home to arguably the best fighting fish in the world (pound for pound) – the mighty Tigerfish. The river systems are also home to a number of other worthy angling species, including catfish, pike and Tilapia species.
